Laverne Ellis

Laverne Ellis, 98, of Jackson, Missouri died Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the Villas of Jackson. She was born May 19, 1927, in Cape Girardeau, MO to Clarence and Agnes Kight Atchison. Laverne and Elwood "Bud" Ellis were married July 2, 1949, in Cape Girardeau. They were married for 73 years. Laverne will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a homemaker who kept the cookie jar full and a seamstress who made prom and wedding dresses. She regularly hosted large family gatherings at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Her love of rocking babies carried through to her last days. Laverne enjoyed reading, walking, listening to music, watching son, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports and was an enthusiastic fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Blues. Survivors include two daughters, Sherry Mayo and Cathy White; son, Rick Ellis; two grandchildren, Melissa (Michael) Hampton, and Gloria (Darrin) Sauerbrunn; six great-grandchildren, Brenna, Murphy, Hannah, and Joseph Hampton, Jake and Josey Sauerbrunn; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elwood "Bud" Ellis; daughter-in-law, Darlene Ellis; son-in-law, Mike White; two brothers, Ardell and Harold Atchison; and a sister, Dorothy Young. Visitation will be 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Ford & Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel in Cape Girardeau. Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 pm Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donny Ford officiating. Burial will be at New Lorimier Cemetery in Cape Girardeau following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to American Cancer Society, PO Box 28566, Saint Louis, MO 63146, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
