Larry Jean Hahn

Larry Jean Hahn, 84, of Scopus, Missouri, passed away peacefully at his home on February 28. 2026 after a courageous battle with cancer and a life well lived. Larry was born January 20, 1942, in Scopus, Missouri, to Lester and Oralee Hahn. As a young boy working on the family farm, he learned the values of hard work and responsibility - qualities he carried with him throughout his life. Larry was a 1959 graduate of Woodland High School. He was a member of the FFA chapter where he received the Star State Farmer Award. On February 5, 1960, Larry married Alice "Faye" Sawyer. Larry was 18 and Faye was 16 when they began a journey together that spanned 66 devoted years. Their union was blessed with three children: Teresa, Lisa, and Lance. Larry retired in 1998 from Wetterau/Super Valu in Scott City after 28 years of delivering groceries to IGA stores throughout America's Heartland. Larry was a born-again Christian who lived his life for the Lord on a daily basis. He taught his children and grandchildren how to pray, how to lean on faith during difficult times, and how to be a devoted follower of Christ. Larry and Faye faithfully attended Haynes Chapel, Harmony, and Delta Baptist churches through the years. One of his favorite hymns was "Blessed Assurance," which he loved to hear wherever it was sung. A fifth-generation farmer, Larry spent his life living and working on the family farm. He appreciated the simple blessings of country life - the smell of freshly cut hay, the warmth and smell of a wood fire in winter, a newborn calf finding its footing for the first time, and the steady roar of a tractor beneath him. Larry was a simple man who enjoyed a good day's work - whether sawing wood, building fence, making hay, or tending to chores around the farm. Sitting idle never suited him. He was always busy, often "piddling" in the shop or tinkering with a tractor. Over the years, he especially enjoyed collecting and restoring Oliver tractors with his son. Larry could always be counted on to give his grandchildren and great-grandchildren four-wheeler and tractor rides around the farm - something he enjoyed as much as they did. In August 2020, Larry was sent home on hospice care with less than 48 hours to live. Instead, he experienced what could only be described as a miraculous recovery that was witnessed and amazingly observed by family, neighbors, and friends. When told the following Tuesday that he was not expected to survive the previous Saturday, Larry simply replied, "Only God knows when He'll take me." Those words became his motto as he went on to enjoy six more Christmas's with his family and share "his story" with whomever circumstances allowed. Larry's warm smile and thankful spirit made him a favorite patient among his caregivers. He wanted to express his heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Carlos Robles and his compassionate office staff at St. Francis Oncology along with the patient rehabilitation wing, as well as Dr. Jeffrey McNabb and his dedicated staff in Cape Girardeau, for the exceptional care, kindness, and support they provided throughout Larry's illness. Larry faithfully followed their advice in his effort to get well, while remaining at peace and ready to meet his Lord when the time came. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lisa Reitzel; a grandson, Brandon Hahn; and a sister, Eleanor McKinnon. He is survived by his loving wife, Faye; children Teresa (Todd) Thompson of Naples, Texas; Lance (Rebecca) Hahn of Scopus, Missouri; Mark Reitzel (Son-in-law) of Whitewater, Mo; grandchildren Lydia Reitzel (Brady) Perkins, Landon Hahn, Layton Hahn, and Shandi McCarty; and great-grandchildren Payton Jean, Jaina Faye, Ashton, and Theo. Larry will be remembered for his strong faith, gentle spirit, steady work ethic, and deep love for his family and the land he called home. His life was a quiet testimony of devotion, hard work, and trust in God. A special thanks to Journey Hospice for taking care of him in his final week. Visitation will be 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, March 6, 2026 at Harmony Church in Marble Hill. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Harmony Church in Marble Hill with the Rev. Eijah Allen, and Todd Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Bollinger County Memorial Park Cemetery in Marble Hill.
