Marilyn Jane Volkerding

Marilyn Jane Volkerding, 90, of Cape Girardeau, Missouri passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at Chateau Girardeau. She was born December 15, 1933 in Syracuse, Kansas to Charles Burton and Anna Ruth Jones Wheeler. She was raised in the Peace Creek community of Western Reno County, Kansas. She graduated from Sylvia, KS Rural High School and Hutchinson Kansas Jr. College. She and Richard W. Volkerding were married April 2, 1953 at Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He preceded her in death on October 13, 2023. In 1969, Jane graduated from SEMO University obtaining a B.S. degree in elementary education. She taught 1st and 3rd grades at Jefferson Elementary for 18 years. She was a charter member and first president of the Girardeau Rose Chapter of Sweet Adelines Inc. Jane was a Christian and a member of the Cape Church of Christ. Jane loved to cook and bake. While she was still able every year at Christmas time, she would ask kids and grandkids what kinds of treats they would like. She never disappointed and everyone enjoyed. Family members often times tried to duplicate her recipes. They were always good, but not quite like Jane's. Jane's chocolate chip cookie recipe was a little bit of this and little bit of that. We will miss her so much. Survivors include three sons, Steven (Sheree) Volkerding of Cape Girardeau, Grant (LeaAnn) Volkerding and Robert (Kathy) Volkerding both of Jefferson City, Missouri; 10 grandchildren, Michelle (Danny) Huesgen, Richard E. Volkerding, Tara (Gabe) Edwards, Jason Volkerding, Jack Volkerding, Ann (Ken) Nash, Amy (Bobby) Chin, Megan Cortez, Leslie (Dave) Chiles, Brian (Susan) Bloomer; 15 great-grandchildren, Lucas Huesgen, Stella Huesgen, Braden Volkerding, Kobi Edwards, Jonas Edwards, Benton Conners, Alexianna Nash, Giovanna Nash, Tyler Chin, Jhon Cortez, Sophia Cortez, Reece Chiles, Alex Chiles, Livia Bloomer, Lucas Bloomer. Also surviving are extended family and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters, Patricia A. Weesner and Sibyl A. Carle; infant grandchild, Beth Ann; son-in-law, Sean Cortez. Visitation will be 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Monday, June 24, 2024 at Ford & Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel in Cape Girardeau. Funeral Service will be at 12:00 pm Monday, June 24, 2024 at Ford & Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel in Cape Girardeau with the Mr. Jared Scaggs officiating. Entombment will be at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum in Cape Girardeau. Memorial contributions may be given to Children's Homes, Inc. or Mercy Southeast Hospice.
